If you’ve read anything by Aleister Crowley, you’ll know that he puts quite a bit of emphasis on the Knowledge and Conversation of your Holy Guardian Angel, or in other words, your higher spiritual being that will guide you through your magickal journey. The grimoire, Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, addresses in detail how one might go about meeting this divine aspect of yourself. The process takes at least half a year and can be quite tedious but also rewarding once you meet your HGA.
That’s where Newcomb’s book comes in. He has taken Abramelin the Mage and modernized the rituals, explaining numerous paths one might take in order to achieve this objective. The book is quite easy to read and follow and would be of interest to anyone considering performing the 6 month operation.
Newcomb also takes measures to debunk common myths about the Abramelin operation. He does not believe one needs to isolate themselves in the middle of the woods for several months or devote their entire lives to obtaining the goal.
The operation itself is comprised of three two-month periods. It starts when you make an oath to complete the ritual and ends when you meet your HGA. He details what you’ll need to complete the operation – a sacred space, an altar, oil and incense of Abramelin (which you can buy at most occult shops or make your own), and potentially special clothing like robes, a wand, and a crown.
The methods of calling your HGA can vary and Newcomb lists a number of ways you might achieve this union. Possible methodologies include yoga, ceremonial magick, astral travel, devotion, and sex magick. What you choose is based on what you are most comfortable with. The purpose of any is to get you to concentrate on achieving an altered state of consciousness where you can meet your HGA.
This is a great book if you’re interested in practical modern magickal practices.
