Lon Milo Duquette writes a quirky autobiography of his life as a practicing magician. Starting with childhood, Duquette catalogs his disillusionment with Christianity early in life, though his dabblings in eastern traditions during the hippie movement, and finally into life as a modern magician. The book is a well balanced mixture of light-hearted antidotes, painful growing experiences, and philosophies of magick without the pretentiousness that some authors subscribe to.
In fact, Duquette isn’t afraid to poke fun at his own shortcomings. In one story, he tells of how he labored for days to create his most perfect magickal wand… only to accidentally snap it in half soon after completion. In another, he describes his first attempt at summoning one of the Goetic demons, Orobas. The ordeal didn’t quite go as planned, and Duquette ended up staggering out of his protection circle to wash his burning eyes before resuming his conversation with the demon horse. And yes, he lives to tell about it!
Among other interesting stories, he describes how he accidentally stepped on a kitten, killing it. Luckily the kitten’s owner, a master pranic healer, used his powers to nurture the kitten back from the dead. His first experience trying out the enochic system of magick proved peculiar until he realized he had a few letters switched during the call. And there’s another anecdote about why it’s probably best not to summon a Goetic demon for a friend!
This book is a must read for anyone interested in the magical lifestyle. Even if you’re just curious about what such practitioners believe, this book is a fun read. It’s never preachy and while Duquette obviously seems quite serious about his life path, he certainly isn’t afraid to laugh at himself.
